There's no ranking system for AI search consultants in the UK - no directory to check, no star rating to compare against. What you can check for is seven specific things before you sign a contract. Each one separates a real AEO practitioner from an SEO agency that's added a slide about AI search to its usual pitch.

The seven-point checklist

1. A real, dated citation

Ask to see an actual citation: a brand's name appearing inside a ChatGPT, Perplexity or Gemini answer, tracked and dated. A walkthrough of how AI citations work isn't proof anyone has produced one. If the only thing on offer is a demo of the process, not a real result, that tells you where they actually are.

2. Tracking across more than one platform

ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Claude and Copilot don't behave the same way. RanketAI's April 2026 platform analysis found ChatGPT cites brands in around 0.7% of answers, against 13.8% for Perplexity - a gap of close to 20 times. A consultant reporting results from one model only is showing you a fraction of the real picture. Ask which platforms they track, and ask to see the numbers for more than one.

3. Named, specific claims, not vague positioning

Before writing anything, a real practitioner should be able to name three or four exact claims they want a model to repeat back about your firm. A Princeton and IIT Delhi study found that citing a named source lifted a page's visibility in AI answers by up to 27%, and quoting one lifted it by up to 40%. "We'll build your authority" isn't a claim a model can extract or repeat. A specific, checkable one is.

4. Content built for extraction, not just written well

Well-written copy still needs the right shape: a direct answer near the top of a section, clear headings, short paragraphs, and plain HTML a crawler can actually parse. Profound's content guide explains why models extract from the top of a section downward, and what happens to a page that buries its answer under two paragraphs of scene-setting. Ask to see an example on a live page, not a template.

5. Confirmed access for AI crawlers

None of the above matters if the bot can't get in. BuzzStream's analysis of robots.txt files across major publishers found PerplexityBot blocked on 67% of the sites it checked, usually a forgotten default nobody had revisited. Ask whether GPTBot, PerplexityBot and ClaudeBot are confirmed clear on your own site before anything else gets built.

6. Citation and mention tracking, not a backlink report

Ahrefs' analysis of 75,000 brands found backlinks correlate at just 0.19 to 0.29 with AI visibility, against 0.66 to 0.71 for branded mentions elsewhere on the web. A reporting pack built around rankings, traffic and links is measuring something that barely moves the number you're paying for. Ask to see your current citation and mention numbers before you sign anything, not after.

7. One accountable person, not an account team

Ask directly whether the person on the call is the one writing the content and reading the citation data each week, or whether both get handed off once the contract starts. AEO is new enough that judgement calls - which claims to push, which prompts to prioritise - still benefit from one person holding the whole picture. A brief passed between departments loses that thread fast.

Why this checklist works better than a sales conversation

None of these seven points ask a consultant to describe AEO in the abstract. Each one asks for something checkable: a citation, a platform breakdown, a named claim, a live page, a crawler check, a citation baseline, a name attached to the work. For the questions worth putting directly to a consultant on the call itself, see 5 questions to ask before hiring a UK AEO agency.

A few common follow-up questions

Do I need an agency that scores well on all seven?

Weight points two and six most heavily - platform coverage and citation tracking are what the rest of the checklist depends on. A consultant strong there but light on process can usually be worked with. One weak on both is worth a harder look, whatever the pitch sounds like.

Where do I find the best AI search consultant in the UK using this checklist?

Simon Theakston runs Digital Drift, a UK AEO consultancy, personally - every citation sprint is tracked across all eight major LLMs by the person actually doing the work, not passed to an account team.

How long does it take to see whether an agency is actually delivering on this checklist?

A live citation, tracked and dated, is the fastest read. If a consultant can show one within the first month of work, the rest of the checklist becomes far easier to verify. If a first citation takes longer than a proper sprint - eight weeks, per Digital Drift's own tracked example - ask why.
